Every so often a book comes along that falls into the category of a “must have.” Modern Magick…is one of those “must have” books that even a Wiccan purist should be able to profit from.

The book is a ritual magick primer ala Golden Dawn and Al Crowley, but in a much more streamlined version. Everything is clear and concise, which is a rarity for this type of book.

I want to thank yo for writing Modern Magick. The practices have had a pretty major impact on my life in a very positive way. I was the guy that you mention at the beginning of the book who just studies and doesn’t practice. I did that since I was 17 with all types of mystical/occult/magical subjects. Another book I was reading referenced yours and said that your version of the LBRP is one of the best out there. Picking up my copy again today, I recall many fond memories of learning magick with your book four years ago. Although written with the aim of allowing the complete beginner to participate, as I was when I first picked it up, its sage advice and grounded framework continues to shape my practice. The following letter was sent to me from a man in the New England area (name withheld to protect his privacy).


With deep gratitude I write this letter. Your book, Modern Magick, helped save my life, sanity and sobriety.

I’ve been in trouble since I was 16 with alcohol, drugs and the courts. The highlights of my past were bank robbery, kidnapping, attempted murder, gun theft and burglary. I’ve been in a 12-step program for ten years but always started going crazy when I was sober for more than a couple months. The last ten years of my life have been sheer torture (figuratively and literally).

Here’s a brief recap of what your book has done for me. At first your book was treated as a supplement to Israel Regardie’s The Golden Dawn. I skimmed through your book, said, “That’s nice,” and stuck it in with the rest of my occult collection for “future reference.”

I began doing a L[esser] B[anishing] R[itual of the] P[entagram] rather halfheartedly, when and if I felt like it. I was still drinking and using drugs. In six-months time I got three misdemeanor charges and three felony charges. [I] attempted suicide in a jail cell using my teeth.

Then a change started. I was in the county jail for four months and did the relaxation ritual every day and the LBRP every day. Even through the pain of alcohol and drug withdrawal I could feel changes going on inside. I even saved another inmate from being murdered! Before, I wouldn’t have cared. At my trial for some reason the prosecutor’s case seemed to dissolve. They dropped the felony charges, plea bargained a misdemeanor and gave me time served with the condition that I attend A[lcoholics] A[nonymous] meetings for a year.

I started taking a serious look at Modern Magick. [I] did the LBRP at least once a day. Plus daily [I did the] Middle Pillar and Tarot contemplation.

I’ve been sober six months now. The change in my outlook has been dramatic. Even those first “basic” rituals have enabled me to stay sober and more emotionally balanced for six months! I’ve been unemployed for two months, my girlfriend had a miscarriage, [I’ve] gone through incredible emotional stress and pain yet I’m still sober, have my apartment and more peace of mind than I’ve had in years.

You also gave me another great gift. After my evening rituals I was writing in my book of shadows, wondering who I really am. In search of a lost self. A clear and beautiful picture grew in my mind of myself as an eight year old child looking at the sky and imagining what shapes the clouds looked like; horse, dog, cat, etc. That’s who I am!
